CNC Press Brake Considerations

CNC press-brake bending is a key connecting operation in sheet metal fabrication. It transforms cut flat sheets into three-dimensional workpieces and directly affects subsequent welding, assembly, and final appearance. Bending may look like simply “bending a sheet,” but it actually involves material springback, tooling selection, bend sequence, accuracy control, and many other considerations. Based on the production experience accumulated by Minshuo Smart Manufacturing, this article summarizes the key points that require attention during CNC bending.

1. Preparation Before Bending

1.1 Drawing Review

Before bending begins, review the drawing comprehensively, focusing on:

  • Bend-line position: Is the distance from the bend line to holes and edges reasonable?
  • Material information: Grade, thickness, and hardness; different materials can have very different bending behavior.
  • Bend angle: The parameters for a 90° bend and a 165° bend are completely different.
  • Tolerance requirements: Are the angle and dimensional tolerances reasonable?

Minshuo Smart Manufacturing reminder: Problems found during drawing review cost almost nothing to correct. Discovering a drawing problem only when bending starts often means reworking or even scrapping the entire batch. We always treat drawing review as the first quality gate of the bending process.

1.2 Inspection of Cut Parts

Before cut parts enter the bending process, perform the following checks:

  • Dimensional deviation: Are the cut dimensions within the range permitted for bending?
  • Burrs and dross: Could burrs at the bottom of the cut affect positioning after bending?
  • Flatness: Is the sheet flat? The accuracy of a warped sheet cannot be guaranteed after bending.
  • Orientation: Are the oxidized and bright cut faces facing the correct direction?

1.3 Tooling Selection

Tooling is the “soul” of bending. Choosing the right tooling is more important than merely adjusting the parameters:

Selection factorDescription
V-die openingNormally 6-8 times the sheet thickness for carbon steel; stainless steel and aluminum require a wider opening.
Punch-tip radiusAffects the minimum bend radius; an excessively large radius creates an oversized bend radius.
Tooling accuracyTool wear reduces accuracy and affects the bend angle.
Material compatibilityUse tooling with hardness appropriate for the material.

2. Bend Sequence: The Key to Accuracy

2.1 Basic Principles

The bend sequence should not be arranged arbitrarily. Follow these principles:

  1. Bend small flanges before large flanges: Once the small flange is formed, it can help position the larger flange.
  2. Bend inside corners before outside corners: An inside bend usually creates less interference with a later outside bend.
  3. Bend high-accuracy features before low-accuracy features: Give priority to critical dimensions.
  4. Consider subsequent operations: The sequence should support convenient welding and assembly.

2.2 Common Bend-Sequence Error

Incorrect example: For a channel-shaped part requiring multiple bends, the large outside flange is bent first, followed by the small inside flange. Once the large outside flange is formed, it blocks the tooling, so the small inside flange cannot approach the punch position and may not be bendable at all.

Correct practice: Bend the small inside flange first, then bend the large outside flange. This keeps the previously formed area within the reachable range of the tooling.

Minshuo Smart Manufacturing experience: For complex bent parts, plan the bend sequence during the design stage and mark bend numbers on the drawing when necessary. A reasonable sequence not only improves accuracy, but also reduces the need for fixtures and increases production efficiency.

3. Material Springback: The Hidden Enemy of Bending Accuracy

3.1 What Is Springback?

Springback is the tendency of a sheet to return to an angle larger than the tooling angle after the bending load is released, because elastic stresses inside the material are released. All metals exhibit springback; they differ only in magnitude.

3.2 Factors Affecting Springback

FactorRelationship
Material hardnessThe harder the material, the greater the springback.
Material thicknessThe thinner the sheet, the larger the springback angle. For example, 0.5 mm stainless steel may spring back by several degrees, while thick sheet generally springs back less.
Bend angleThe smaller the angle, meaning the deeper the bend, the greater the springback.
V-die widthThe wider the V-die, the greater the springback.
Material typeStainless steel > carbon steel > aluminum sheet.

3.3 Ways to Address Springback

  1. Overbending compensation: Set the tooling angle slightly smaller than the target angle and use springback to return to the target.
  2. Bottoming: For materials with significant springback, press the sheet firmly into the bottom of the V-die. Local plastic deformation can greatly reduce springback.
  3. Accumulation of experience data: Record springback for different materials and thicknesses and establish a compensation-parameter library.

Minshuo Smart Manufacturing recommendation: The best compensation data comes from long-term accumulation. For the first bend of each project, make one or two trial pieces, measure the actual angle, adjust the compensation, and then start batch production after confirmation. This “validate first, produce in volume later” approach can greatly reduce the batch scrap rate.

4. Key Points for Accuracy Control

4.1 Dimensional Accuracy

The dimensional accuracy of bent parts is affected by many factors:

  • V-die width: A 0.1 mm deviation in V-die width may cause a bend-height deviation of more than 0.05 mm.
  • Material-thickness tolerance: When sheet thickness is uneven, the same parameters produce different heights.
  • Machine accuracy: The repeat-positioning accuracy of the press brake directly affects bending accuracy.
  • Tooling clearance: Wear increases the clearance and affects bend angle and height.

4.2 Angle Accuracy

The key to angle control is:

  • Set the overbending amount accurately.
  • Calibrate the equipment regularly.
  • Keep the tooling clean and free of foreign matter.

4.3 Recommended Accuracy-Control Flow

Initial trial bend (1-2 pieces)
-> Measure critical dimensions and angles
  -> Compare with target values
-> Adjust parameters (compensation and dwell time)
      -> Perform another trial bend
-> Confirm acceptance -> Start batch production

5. Safe-Operation Considerations

In accordance with current production-safety requirements, pay special attention to the following:

  • Never place hands below the V-die: Keep hands away from the danger zone while the press-brake ram is descending.
  • Use safety devices: Light curtains, two-hand controls, and other safety devices must be used and kept functional.
  • Support the workpiece securely: When bending a large sheet, ensure stable support to prevent tilted loading.
  • Install tooling securely: Improperly secured tooling may fly out and injure people during high-speed bending.
  • Wear appropriate clothing: Do not wear gloves during operation because they may be caught by the sheet edge or tooling. Tie back long hair.

6. Common Quality Problems in Bent Parts

ProblemPossible causeSolution

Cracking at the bendBend radius is too small, material is too hard, or bend line is parallel to rolling directionIncrease punch-tip radius and check the material; arrange the bend line perpendicular to the rolling direction where possible
Skewed bend lineUneven tooling clearance or sheet not placed flatCalibrate the tooling and flatten the sheet
Indentation on the bend surfaceDamaged tooling surface or excessive pressureReplace the tooling and reduce pressure
Accumulated dimensional errorErrors accumulate across multiple bendsOptimize the bend sequence and calibrate step by step
